Houma Police arrested a local man Thursday morning after he tried to discard a bag filled with marijuana, a department spokesman said.

Officers spotted William K. Riley, 50, 327 Ruth St., stumbling in the road on New Orleans Boulevard near Eschete Lane around 12:49 a.m., said Lt. Todd Duplantis. The police quickly deduced that Riley was highly intoxicated and was acting nervous, he said.

Riley was arrested after he attempted to discard a plastic bag from his pants, Duplantis said. The bag contained a green leafy substance, suspected to be marijuana.

Officers recovered the suspected marijuana for evidence, which will be sent to the State Police crime lab for testing, Duplantis said.

Riley was charged with disturbing the peace by intoxication and possession of marijuana.
