A Houma man was killed early Thursday morning after he was ejected from the pickup truck he was driving.

Michael Positerry, 47, was driving a 1998 Nissan truck south on La. Highway 56 just after 3 a.m.

Upon reaching a left-hand curve, the truck ran off the road to the right, swerved partially back onto the roadway and exited the road for a second time, according to Louisiana State Police.

After leaving the highway for the second time, the truck flipped and came to rest on its roof in an empty lot, state police reported.

Positerry was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the truck, police said.

Positerry was pronounced dead at Chabert Medical Center.

State police are cautioning motorists and passengers to fasten their seat belts and said the safest place to be during a rollover crash is inside the vehicle.

“Last year, more than half of the fatal crashes that occurred in Louisiana involved someone who was unrestrained,” Troop C spokesman Russell Graham II said. “The short amount of time it takes to buckle up can mean the difference between getting home safely and never making it home again.”
