Last week, Houma beat Alexandria and Monroe to win the state’s Cleanest City Contest title in the category of cities with populations between 22,000 and 60,000, sponsored locally by the Terrebonne Garden Club. “The approaches to the city were good,” said garden club president Mary Jane Peters about preparations for the contest. “La. Highway 311 is a beautiful area. Coming down Barrow Street, we were out cleaning, trimming weeds around fences. Citizens got out and worked on the streets, got them clean. You didn’t see any trash.” Peters said the contest was close. Houma had not won a state Cleanest City Contest title since the early 1980s. “We thought we looked good, but there are still areas where we have blight,” Peters said. Garden club member Judy Navarre said judges were impressed by the way Houma regrouped after the 2008 hurricanes. Morgan City also won a state title in its population category.
