A local man prides himself on keeping safety first.

His commitment to that premise has earned him one of the top honors of his craft.

Houma native Karl Geist was named the 2011 Safety Professional of the Year, an award presented to the safety professional among the Louisiana Motor Transport Association (LMTA) members who have exhibited “outstanding support in the safety field.”

Geist is an employee of Steve Kent Trucking.

The award was presented by Louisiana State Police Col. Michael Edmonson, Louisiana State Police Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program Capt. Mark Morrison and Lonnie Bennett Conway with Freight-LMTA Safety Management Council.

It was handed out at the LMTA Truck Driving Championships in Baton Rouge, which took place from June 3-4 and totaled 91 drivers who logged more than 128,000,000 accident-free miles in the past year.

Geist is involved in every facet of safety in his company, including DOT compliance, driver training, accident investigation and CDL testing. He is also a defensive driving instructor, a CDL examiner and a DOT, HAZCOM and Forklift safety trainer.

Geist has been nominated for the ATA 2011 Safety Director Award.
