“Honor, pride and dedication” is the motto of the Houma Police Department, and the values by which their 2013 Officer of the Year, Jeffery Jackson, performs his job by.

A patrolman with the department since February 2008, Jackson said he was shocked and excited when he learned about the honor voted on by his peers.

“It’s a great honor,” he said. “I’m grateful for the recognition because I know every other nominee was just as capable of winning.”

Born in Mississippi, Jackson moved to Louisiana and lived with his aunt and uncle in Dularge. He is a 2006 graduate of Terrebonne High School.

Jackson became interested in law enforcement and knew he wanted to help people after hearing stories from his cousin who also works for the Houma Police Department.

“Growing up watching my cousin in law enforcement, it just drew me in,” the officer said. “I became more interested after watching her and became fascinated with the job seeing what she did.”

Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis said Officer Jackson shows passion, dedication and professionalism for his job while showcasing respect for victims and witnesses.

“Officer Jackson needs very little supervision and is receptive to constructive criticism as he desires to become a better officer,” Duplantis said on March 26 at the Terrebonne Parish Council meeting, where Jackson was presented with the honor.

Moving forward, Jackson intends to stay with the Houma Police Department and would like to transition into the traffic division handling crash investigations.

As he continues to receive support and recognition as HPD’s officer of the year, the only negative aspect he can pinpoint about his job is the paperwork.

But with that aside, Jackson enjoys going to work every day not knowing what to expect.

“Every day is different, it’s never the same,” he said about patrol work.
