Wildly popular TV shows like AMC’s “The Walking Dead” have created an obsession with the idea of a zombie apocalypse, and now there is a chance to be part of one, without actually being eaten, of course.

The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center’s “Hurricane Z” Haunted House at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum is open from 7-11 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Oct. 25 as part of the Rougarou Festival.

Folks will now have the opportunity to be part of a zombie-infested land.

“It will be strictly zombies, no clowns or Frankenstein or anything like that,” Center Director Jonathan Foret said.

“Hurricane Z” will provide a southern twist to the apocalypse.

The premise of the haunted house is a story about two southern brothers named Calvin and Willis seeking shelter from a zombie apocalypse as well as an oncoming storm when things go crazy quickly.

“You walk into the side doors and enter into an area that is set up to be a storm shelter. They have different cells set up. It kind of resembles something you may see in ‘The Walking Dead,’” Foret said. “It is not like haunted houses in the past. We used to have different rooms with different scenes, so it is not like that. It is more like the scene builds up. The zombies become more and more riled up as the people get closer to the end. It does climax. There are some fun scares that will take place throughout.”

With roughly 20 zombies in the house at all times, Foret said safety is the main priority. Security will be placed throughout the facility to ensure that there is no foul play.

“Safety is the number one concern for the actors in the house and the people coming through. Our volunteers are families. We have parents and children around 8 or 9 years old,” Foret said. “They wanted to join because they enjoy dressing up and wanted to be zombies. They are there to entertain and we want them safe.”

There will be no touching at all. No bags or backpacks are allowed inside the house.

The entry fee is $10.

Perhaps Wetlands Discovery Center Director Jonathan Foret was foreshadowing the „Hurricane Z‰ Haunted House when he dressed as a zombie at last year‚s Rougarou Festival.
