The Disaster Recovery Center for Lafourche Parish in Mathews set up the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist victims of hurricanes Gustav and Ike closed on Jan. 2.

The closing leaves only the location in Houma at the Town Hall building (805 Barrow Street) as the only Disaster Recovery Center open in the Tri-parishes. The location in Assumption Parish is open as well.

Staff at the center can answer questions about registration for disaster assistance, help with disaster loan applications and provide information on other programs.

Homeowners and business owners affected by hurricanes Gustav and Ike needing assistance can also receive help by calling FEMA’s toll-free registration line a t 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) (TTY 1-800-462-7585) or online at www.fema.gov.

Residents must be registered with FEMA to receive federal assistance.

The U.S. Small Business Administration offers low-interest loans to homeowners and business owners for losses caused by the hurricanes not covered by insurance.

The SBA can loan up to $200,000 to repair damaged residences and up to $40,000 to replace destroyed personal property. Businesses can borrow up to $2 million.

Residents do not have to apply for an SBA loan to receive FEMA’s temporary housing assistance that includes rental assistance and home repair funds, as well as grants for public transportation expenses and some medical expenses.

However, residents have to complete an SBA loan application for FEMA assistance covering personal property.
