The Tri-parish area’s first new resident of 2013 got to town a little early. Twenty-four days early to be exact.

“I wasn’t due until Jan. 25, but I started feeling really funny at about 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve,” said Carlmariel Santiago, whose son Edwin Ezequiel Santiago made his debut at 9:08 a.m. New Year’s Day. “My husband and I checked into the hospital at 11 p.m. the night before. We didn’t sleep at all that night. My husband was there with me every step of the way, but he was falling asleep at the same time. He cheered me on.”

The Santiagos, of Houma, had already suspected that their newest bundle of joy, who arrived with a head full of medium brown hair, was going to be a little early after a Dec. 27 doctor’s appointment revealed that Carlmariel was already dilated.

“The doctor said to wait at least one more week before inducing because I was only 35 weeks along,” Carlmariel said as she held her 19-inch, 7.1-pound bouncing baby boy, whom nurses at Terrebonne General Medical Center had just changed and wrapped in a zoo animal-printed fleece blanket. “I was so happy and excited to find out that we were going to have the first baby of the New Year at the hospital. I actually have a friend from Puerto Rico who had her baby at 12:01 New Year’s Eve.”

In addition to bragging rights for the rest of 2013, the Santiagos also received a gift basket from TGMC, which included a photo session for Baby Edwin’s first photos, blankets, bottles, a silver duck coin bank, a plate, bowl and utensil set and a bath set.

Baby Edwin, named after his father and Carlmariel’s grandfather Ezequiel, is the latest addition to the Santiago family. Two-year-old brother Carlos also welcomed the new baby home.

“Carlos was sitting here saying ‘be-be,’” Carlmariel said, laughing. “He is happy about his new brother. He kept wanting to grab him and hold him. I think he thinks Edwin is a doll.”

Carlmariel expressed a little worry over going home with a brand-new baby and a 2-year-old, but said that help would be arriving soon.

“My mom is a pre-kindergarten teacher in Boston, and she’s coming down next week and staying for two weeks to help out,” she said as Edwin fell asleep in her arms.

Carlmariel Santiago of Houma holds her newborn son Edwin Ezequiel Santiago. The baby, the first born in Houma in 2013, is named after Santiago’s husband Edwin and grandfather Ezequiel.
