The competency hearing for the Thibodaux man accused of beheading his 7-year-old special-needs son in 2011 has been delayed due to scheduling conflicts among anticipated witnesses, District Attorney Cam Morvant II said.

Jeremiah Wright was scheduled to appear in court Monday. The proceedings have since been moved to next month.

Wright is suspected of decapitating and dismembering Jori Lirette, who had cerebral palsy and used a wheelchair, at his West Seventh Street home.

Wright, who has referred to his son as an inanimate object part of a government-sponsored social experiment, has twice been judged as incompetent to stand trial, most recently following a six-day hearing in February this year.

State doctors are tasked with restoring his competency and discharging Wright for trial proceedings, based on Louisiana Supreme Court-derived criteria. District Judge John LeBlanc found gaps in their rationale for the last discharge.

LeBlanc will again hear testimony to determine whether Wright is mentally fit to stand trial. His decision has no bearing on Wright’s mental health at the time of his son’s slaying.

Jeremiah Wright is escorted to his competency hearing by Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Deputies. Wright is accused of the first-degree murder of Jori Lirette, his 7-year-old disabled son.
