Auditions for a two-day April production of the Webber and Rice rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” will be held in Houma this weekend, producers said.

The production itself will occur April 8 and 9 at the newly renovated South Lafourche High School auditorium in Galliano.

Producer Lorna Gianelloni Farrar and director Perry Martin have joined forces to present the classic and are eager to procure local talent for the production. Potential cast members should call for appointments, to be scheduled for either Saturday or Sunday, Oct. 15 and 16.

Released first as a concept album in 1970, “Jesus Christ Superstar” was staged on Broadway the next year.

The iconic show – which at the time of its release sparked furious controversy – provides an account of the last days of Jesus, beginning with his triumphant entry into Jerusalem and ending with his crucifixion.

All parts are sung, with no spoken dialogue.

Roles are open for singers, actors and dancers. Performers should prepare two musical selections for auditions, consisting of a song from the score and an alternative selection that is not from the musical.

The purpose of the second song, the producer said, is to demonstrate vocal range.

Head shots or photos along with resumes should be brought to the audition, which can be scheduled by calling 868-1298. Resumes and headshots may be emailed evangelineoaks@gmail.com

The auditions will be held Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sunday between 1 and 3 p.m. at Creole Lanes, 1371 W. Tunnel Blvd. in Houma. Tansy Waguespack is the show’s musical director.

A keyboard will be available for use at the audition but there will be no accompanist. A CD player will also be available for use, and a capella auditions, Perry Martin said, are perfectly acceptable. •
