The all-women’s volunteer group, Junior Auxiliary of Houma, added 15 members to its chapter after completing six months of training.

The new members are asked to commit five years of service to Houma children and women in need.

“I am very excited to welcome our new class of 15 hard working and dedicated ladies,” President Shelley Bergeron said.

All members are asked to complete 60 service hours per year as part of their commitment.

“In a month, you could easily put in 20 hours of service. A lot of the women are mothers and professionals,” Lauren Bordelon said. “It just adds to what you are doing in your everyday life.”

Bordelon has friends and work colleagues from Houma’s Main Library who are part of the organization, so she reached out to join.

“I wanted to get back in the community and get back into doing service,” she said. “This presented itself as a great opportunity to do that. I took advantage of it, and I am happy that it did.”

One of the benefits for Bordelon is joining people from the area with common lifestyles, goals and ambitions.

Another new member, Misty McElroy agreed that networking has been a major benefit to joining.

“I have only been in a very short time, and I have met so many people already. We had a social the other night, and I sat with some women I have never met before. We had a great time,” McElroy said. “Networking with people who have the same interests as me is going to be great.”

Volunteer work has always been important to McElroy, so joining was an easy decision for her as well.

“I was excited to be part of something outside of work, because work takes up so much of my time,” she said. “I always wanted to be involved in volunteering and in the community. When I was approached, I knew this was my chance.”
