Louisiana state parks and historic sites are offering a high-tech treasure hunt.

It’s called geocaching – using clues and GPS to locate a weatherproof box holding mementos or trinkets. Hunters who find the cache take one item and leave another in its place.

People who find all 41 official caches can win a silver “geocoin” minted for the campaign. Prizes include a set of three such coins – one silver, one bronze and one black alloy – and a weekend stay at a state park.

The project is a joint venture between Louisiana State Parks and Geocachers of Louisiana. Geocoins are assigned IDs so their locations can be tracked.

The Office of State Parks says the caches coordinates were made public Friday.
