Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph announced last week that the parish has lifted the ban of non-agricultural fires on private property.

The burning of materials can only occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Residents who wish to do so are urged to first contact the state Department of Environmental Quality Lockport office.

“There are some limitations on that; time limitations as well as distance limitations,” said Randolph, who added that the fire chiefs asked the parish to turn over the responsibility to the state agency.

The parish imposed a burn ban on May 10. The state followed by prohibiting non-agricultural fires on May 31. Both cited dry conditions.

The parish guidelines on the burning of public waste are detailed in parish ordinance 4363, which can be found at www.lafourchegov.org.

The DEQ can be reached at (985) 532-6206.

Meanwhile, Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain issued a reminder that the state burn ban is in effect.

The state department is flying a red flag to symbolize the on-going ban. The flag includes the words “Burn Ban” in white lettering and features a flame threatening a tree and a structure.

“We are in a three-year drought that has made for extremely dry conditions across the state,” Strain said. “LDAF wildland firefighting crews are on 24-hour call and suppressing wildfires on a daily basis.”

More than 1,704 wildfires that burned 20,840 acres have already been reported and suppressed through June 30 of this year, Strain said. Last year, the state forestry office recorded 1,078 fires that burned 10,772 acres through the same period.

Because Randolph has lifted the ban, the state prohibition does not apply to Lafourche Parish, the fire marshal’s office said.
