A Lafourche Parish jury returned a guilty verdict against a multiple narcotics offender last week.

Tyler Baye, 20, of 410 Ravenwood St., Thibodaux, was charged with third-offense possession of marijuana. He now faces up to 20 years in prison and a $5,000 fine, according to Lafourche District Attorney Camille Morvant II.

The arrest stemmed from a May 2013 investigation by the Lafourche Parish Drug Task Force.

Baye was suspected of using his girlfriend to sell narcotics in the Thibodaux area, according to authorities. On May 8, 2013, the task force, with the help of a confidential informant, made an undercover purchase from Baye’s girlfriend. Baye was also present at the transaction.

Based on that sale, an arrest warrant was issued for Baye. Authorities found an additional quantity of marijuana, which was seized, when he was taken into custody.

Sentencing is set for Aug. 21 before District Judge Jerome J. Barbera III.

“Our office has had a great deal of success working with the task force in prosecuting these narcotics cases,” Morvant said. “It’s important that we take advantage of all the resources at our disposal to go after the drug dealers in our community.”

Assistant District Attorney Heather Hendrix, who prosecuted the case, said Baye’s illegal drug involvement extended further than initially suspected. “Even though Mr. Baye may only stand convicted of possession, in reality he is a dealer,” she said. “We’re hoping that when he’s sentenced, it will send a message to others who are in the same line of work.”
