The Lafourche NAACP will hold its first freedom banquet in a decade, Saturday, at 7 p.m., in the St. Luke Community Center in Thibodaux.

The theme is “The NAACP Celebrates 100 Years – Let Us Unite,” Chapter President Burnell Tolbert said. The guest speaker is Dr. O. Cleveland Hill, a former Nicholls State University dean of education, who is now principal of the Max Charter School in Thibodaux.

“This year NAACP celebrates 100 years of commitment and service to furthering the causes of freedom and equality for all people,” Tolbert said. “In keeping with this, the Lafourche Parish branch is partnering the efforts of our members and supporters – local businesses, civic organizations, churches and others, to continue this great work in our area.”

Tickets are still for sale at $25 per person, and reserved tables can be purchased for $300. For more information, call Amour Pack, one of the banquet chairmen at (985) 447-9258. “A portion of the proceeds from the event will be earmarked for scholarships to college-bound graduates of Lafourche Parish high schools in 2010,” Pack said.
