The Lafourche Parish Office of Community Action is providing fans to elderly and disabled residents of the parish who make less than certain income thresholds.

Residents qualify if they make less than 125 percent of the poverty line depending on how many members of their household there are.

Executive Director of Community Action Freddia Ruffin-Roberson said these fans will be available at the three outreach sites in Thibodaux, Mathews and Galliano.

“Our goal is and always is to help assist those in need of help,” she said. “With the heat we’ve been experiencing lately, it only makes sense to provide fans to some of the older citizens in our parish.”

The income limits are on a sliding scale. A single elderly or disabled resident who makes $14,713 or less per year qualifies for a fan. On the same scale, a person making $30,313 or less per year who has three others in their household qualify.

The fans are paid for through community service grants from the federal government. In order to qualify, residents must meet the following requirements and bring the following documents:

• Proof of income (4 check stubs)

• Social Security Cards

• Proper Identification for head of household

• Documentation of all household expenses

• Food stamp print out sheet updated in the last 30 days

• Must be a resident of Lafourche Parish

The fans will be distributed at each of the three different locations on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Residents may pick up their fans at the following locations and times:

• Galliano Outreach Office, 16241 E. Main St. Suite 13B, Cut Off, 985-632-3989; Tuesday, Aug. 11, 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

• Thibodaux Outreach Office (Lafourche Parish Health Unit), 2535 Veterans Blvd., Thibodaux, 985-446-6731; Wednesday, Aug. 12, 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

• Mathews Site Office, 4876 Hwy 1, Mathews, 985-537-7603; Thursday, August 13, 9-11a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

Additionally, Roberson said a small number of portable 6,000 BTU air-conditioner units are available for residents currently on oxygen tanks.
