About 125 students now at Chackbay Elementary in Lafourche Parish may be going to another school next year, as Lafourche, like many districts in Louisiana, tries to conserve money by consolidating schools.

The Chackbay students could find themselves next year at Bayou Boeuf if the plan goes through.

Some parents are complaining that the change would be inconvenient. It would mean longer bus rides for students and could cause some children’s grades to go down.

Parish school officials say Chackbay is too crowded, with 485 students. The proposed shift would balance enrollment. They also note that state education dollars are based on enrollment. Decreasing enrollment at Bayou Boeuf means less money to keep that school running, so the plan would address that problem, too.
