Lafourche parks director resigns post

After one year of holding the position, Greg Sanamo announced his resignation as Lafourche Parish’s director of Parks and Recreation at the last Parish Council meeting and has accepted a job at LeBlanc Sanitation Services LLC in Cut Off.

“I just love the recreational program,” Sanamo said. “I have a passion for keeping the kids off the street. That’s something I’ve always said. If you keep them busy, they don’t have as much time to get in trouble.”

Sanamo taught civics for three years at South Lafourche High School. “I feel fortunate to have served because as a trained civics teacher, here I got to see it first-hand and got to be a part of many people’s lives,” he said.

The former director said he will continue to work with the parish, free of charge, until he sees the fruition of a couple of projects currently underway, including an outdoor basketball court on La. Highway 308 in Raceland.

Sanamo said a representative with the New Orleans Hornets told him the deal with BP to construct the court was “unofficially official.”

Government employees cannot run for public office. Sanamo said he had expressed interest in campaigning for a seat on the Lafourche Parish School Board and added that he was leaving LPG in case he decided to pursue politics in the future.

Elections for Lafourche Parish Council will be held in the fall. Phillip Gouaux, who holds the seat in District 7, Sanamo’s district, confirmed he will not run for re-election after serving three terms.

“I’ve spent 12 years of my life serving the public and enjoyed in thoroughly, but I have a father that is 88, a mother that is 86, still in good health,” Gouaux said. “But I have two businesses, 12 grandkids and as much as I enjoy doing for the public, I think it’s time for me to spend a little time with my family.”

Sanamo was noncommittal as far as campaigning for a council seat.
