All Lafourche residents, regardless of age, income or health coverage, are now eligible for a prescription drug discount card.

The card offers an average 24 percent savings off the retail price of prescription medications, according to CVS Caremark, which administers the program. Lafourche’s involvement was facilitated by a partnership with the National Association of Counties.

Some pet medications are eligible for discounts through the card.

“This card offers residents – insured and uninsured – significant savings on prescription medications,” Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph said.

Residents can obtain the discount cards from any of the parish’s library branches, government complexes or Council on Aging sites. The card can also be obtained online at www.caremark.com/naco, where a zip code is enough to produce a printable document.

At least 100 pharmacies within a 50-mile radius of Mathews participate in the program, including Rite Aid, Walgreens, Walmart and several locally owned drug stores.

More than 1,400 counties nationwide participate in the program. Lafourche became the 21st Louisiana parish to offer the cards, joining Terrebonne in the Tri-parish region.
