Lafourche Parish District Attorney Cam Morvant II made his annual appearance before the Lafourche Parish School Board last Wednesday to present his annual report and recommend the Leger & Shaw law firm based out of New Orleans to handle all matters related to the Deepwater Horizon explosion.

The board unanimously accepted the recommendation.

If the board sustains a loss of revenue because of the oil spill, they will be faced with decisions on whether or not they move forward and accept pre-payments, which could disqualify them for later settlements, Morvant said.

“It may just be for advice and you’re not paying him,” he said. “You can call him for anything.”

In his annual report, Morvant focused on attendance. He said his office pays for an officer to keep tabs on “six or seven schools with chronic truant students,” and he hopes to hire three truancy officers – one for North, Central and South Lafourche.

Board Accepts Type 1 Public Charter School Application,

will request third-party audit

Bayou Community Academy’s application to become a Type 1 Public Charter School has been accepted by the school board, and it will move forward and request an independent audit of the academy.

If approved, Bayou Community Academy would operate under the guidance of the LPSB, but the academy would have its own school board. Its academic focus would be on college preparation.

Local Student to serve as club national president

South Lafourche High School senior Trent Eymard was recognized at the opening of the meeting after recently being elected to the office of Future Business Leaders of America National President.

Eymard is Louisiana’s first FBLA state president to serve for two terms, 2009-2010 and 2010-2011. He was also elected governor of Louisiana at Boys State 2010.
