In addition to statewide pay raises, teachers in Lafourche Parish will also see a little extra on their paychecks in the 2019-20 academic year.

The parish announced last week at their regularly scheduled school board meeting that step increases for teachers will be re-instated in the future after being frozen for the past three years due to budget cuts within the district.

The vote to lift the freeze passed the school board unanimously and Lafourche Schools Superintendent Louis Voiron said he believes the vote marked a huge boost to teachers in a system that ranked No. 3 in the state last year.

“It is something that we believe will be very beneficial,” Voiron said.

The vote and proposal, Voiron said, was made with careful consideration. It will cost the school system about $485,000 per year, but it’s a number Voiron said the system is ready to pay annually.

“We don’t want to go back and forth,” he said.

The school system also handed teachers back a contract day to those on a 185-plus-day contract at the meeting. •
