In an unexpected move, Lafourche Parish Councilman Brent Callais has announced that he will not be a candidate for a second term in the upcoming October election.

Callais has represented the area encompassing District 8 for the last four years after pulling off an impressive victory in 2003 in his first bid for public office.

“While I have greatly enjoyed serving the people of District 8 as well as all of the fine citizens of Lafourche Parish, I have decided to focus my energies on my private life,” he said. “I am proud that we accomplished some meaningful achievements during my term in office such as improved drainage and flood protection and the creation of a beachfront development district for Port Fourchon. We were also able to roll back some millages to give taxpayers relief.”

Although he is not seeking another term, Callais said he intends to keep active in the political scene and acknowledged that “you never say never” when asked about a possible run for elective office in the future.
