A new Houma club dedicated to charity is hosting a scavenger hunt next weekend to raise money for veterans and bike racks.

The Rotary of Downtown Houma is hosting its inaugural Bayou Goose Chase on Saturday, June 17. The chase is a digital scavenger hunt, with participants using an app that leads hunters to take photos doing specific activities at unique sites throughout Houma. The app will actively tally points, and the club will have an awards ceremony for the winners, and also those who didn’t quite win, at the end of the game.

The press release announcing the event said proceeds will go toward the club’s two philanthropic goals for the year. The first is place bicycle racks in downtown Houma to encourage bicycle use and alleviate traffic in the area, and the second is to support the START Corporation’s Supportive Services for Veterans, a program where specialists provide education, guidance and service to help veterans and their families find and secure the benefits they are owed. Tim McNabb, president of the rotary club, said the main goal of this scavenger hunt is to set the foundation for larger hunts in the future.

“Even if we don’t raise any extra money – and it looks like we are – but even if we didn’t raise any extra money, the whole idea was for everybody to have fun and come back next year and try to grow it. We want it to be an annual deal,” McNabb said.

The RDH was chartered in December 2016 and is the fourth rotary club in the area. McNabb said the new club is comprised of former members of the other three clubs who wanted to make a club more accessible to those who wanted to be part of a service organization but could only attend meetings after work hours.

“The idea was to create a rotary club where people who couldn’t get off during lunches could come meet. So, having one at 5:30 after hours and not having a meal makes it a lot cheaper to be a member,” McNabb said.

The Bayou Goose Chase begins with registration at 9 a.m. at Downtown Jeaux on Church Street next Saturday. The game takes place from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., with the awards ceremony following outside of Downtown Jeaux immediately after. Teams consist of five members, and they can pre-register by downloading forms on the club’s Facebook page. Teams cost $125 if registered before June 15, with the cost rising to $150 after that.
