The Bayou Civic Club has added STEM-based curricum, thanks to a little help from a local oil and gas powerhouse.

With help from Chevron, the curriculum, which stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering and Math,” and those core offerings will now be part of the Larose Regional Park’s Summer Camp Program.

The annual camp was created as a youth development initiative to help keep children safe and connected to educational opportunities during the summer months.

Children ages 5-13 attend the program, which is tailored to serve working parents in Lafourche Parish.

The camp runs from May 30 – August 4, which spans just about the entire summer vacation in the parish.

“We’re proud to add these educational elements to our summer camp this year. We’re also very grateful for Chevron’s year-round support,” said Jasmine Ayo, the Executive Director for the Bayou Civic Club. “This partnership and our expanded program are helping broaden children’s minds in a fun and exciting way.”

The annual 10-week summer camp gives children a safe place to learn during summer.

By adding the STEM classes, that will be taken to the next level, according to those familiar with the program.

In addition to STEM, the classes also feature a visit to the park, a swimming pool, access to a playground and gym and more.

Participants are also introduced to several community members, who educate them on community issues.

“We’re pleased that Lafourche Parish children attending the LRP Summer Camp now have access to engaging classroom activities and experiments that help bring learning to life,” said Leah Brown, Chevron’s Gulf of Mexico Public Affairs Manager. “The addition of STEM curriculum will help students foster a passion for science, technology, engineering and math.” •
