Since Terrebonne Parish has amended its ordinances on the sale and use of fireworks within the parish, many vendors have set up shop locally during the busy holiday season. Sam Lusco, owner of Sam’s Fireworks at 6934 W. Park Ave., said that being able to sell fireworks within the parish has opened up opportunities that vendors have not had for a long time.

“We’re trying to give people the opportunity to buy stuff locally here in Terrebonne Parish rather than going out of town,” Lusco said.

Lusco said that the response from the public has been positive, and that many of his customers are glad to finally be able to buy and use fireworks in Terrebonne Parish rather than purchase them in Lafourche or other surrounding parishes.

“People have actually come in very pleased and surprised and glad that they’re able to do it finally. It’s been a really good response, and a lot of people have thanked us for doing it and keeping it right here in our community,” Lusco said.

Lusco said that currently, he plans to continue doing business in Terrebonne Parish, unless the parish were to amend their ordinances again.

“As of now, yes, depending on what other restrictions the parish may put in place,” Lusco said.

In light of the changes to the ordinances, TPSO has received multiple complaints over the past week of disruptive fireworks and fireworks being lit within the city limits. In a release on Monday, Sheriff Tim Soignet sent out a reminder that it is still illegal under the current parish ordinances to light fireworks within the city limits of Houma. Fireworks may also only be used within the dates and times laid out in the ordinances, from dusk on Dec. 31 until 1:00 AM on Jan. 1. Soignet also commented on the safe use of fireworks.

“As with anything else, we expect people to make wise decisions when it comes to using fireworks. Please show courtesy to your neighbors by following the time restrictions,” Soignet said.

Lusco expressed similar sentiment when asked about the safe and responsible use of fireworks.

“Well, we tell everybody to make sure that they are safe. When using them, follow the instructions on them. Get back away from them, and don’t let small kids play with them. I tell them to use good, good care and safety,” Lusco said. “We try to stress that it’s important to us. It’s like with anything, you have to use common sense, and another thing we tell them is to be respectful to your neighbors.”
