Amy Martinez is one busy lady. She is always seen with a calendar and tries to keep organized while she balances career demands, community involvement and family responsibilities.

When she is not working to keep Entergy’s business customers connected and their billing questions answered, Martinez is actively involved as a volunteer with multiple organizations.

“I am chairman for the Lafourche Council on Aging advisory board, I sit on the board for Lafourche Community Action, I’m a graduate of Leadership Lafourche and Leadership Terrebonne, I’m a board member for the Lafourche Chamber of Commerce, I am on the infrastructure committee for the South Central Industrial Association, and this year I am chairman of Keep Louisiana Beautiful,” Martinez said.

This businesswoman credits her father, James Martinez, as having been her biggest influence and the example she holds with dealing with others in the corporate world. “He was very driven, but it wasn’t career driven. [My father] was driven by his family. He worked a lot of hours and had an impeccable work ethic,” she said.

Before entering the world of energy supply, Amy Martinez worked in the law office of Oscar Shoenfelt in Baton Rouge where she represented professional sports figures. “We worked as business managers for NBA players. I bought houses, I bought cars, I did endorsements for [player clients] and did the public relations work,” she touted.

When Martinez got married she decided to stop traveling and intended to stay home and raise a family. “But I thought ‘I can’t do this. I’m way too energetic.’ That’s how I ended up at Entergy,” she said.

While Martinez is driven in her career she maintains a priority for family and a spiritual commitment. “I don’t take ‘no’ for an answer. That’s kind of that driven part of me,” she said.

“Basically, what I do every day [with Entergy] is my interaction with local and state governmental officials. My assigned accounts are shipyards, the hospitals, Port Fourchon and the Port of Terrebonne. You never know on a given day if there is going to be an issue that explodes with one of your customers,” she said.

Martinez not only watches to make sure the lights stay on with her customers, it is up to her to make arrangements for power line adjustments in situations like ships being moved from construction or maintenance areas to the coastal ports. “I might have to de-energize a line for that or I’ll have to work with my customers on billing issues because most of my customers have multiple accounts and pay in excess of $50,000 a month,” she said. “My job can be reactive but I try to be proactive.”

Advice offered by Martinez to women entering business is for them to be organized, find a mentor and become a sponge around that person. “One of the things I think it is really important in the business world is to learn the hands-on knowledge that you can get from people in the field who have been in the industry for years,” she said.

“I always have a notebook with me and I write everything I do,” Martinez said. “Anything I didn’t do today, I write notes for tomorrow.”
