Residential real estate foreclosure rates in Louisiana’s five major metropolitan areas saw a significant increase in 2010, indicating that tough economic times for homeowners are far from over.


Louisiana foreclosure rates were at 2.72 percent this past April, a 0.35 percent increase over the 2.37 percent level for the same month in 2010, according to CoreLogic. During the same time, national foreclosure rates experienced a 0.42 percent boost at a rate of 3.47 percent.


The Houma-Thibodaux Metropolitan Statistical Area posted a 0.15 percent increase in the number of foreclosure listings from April 2010 to April 2011, but saw a decline on 90-day delinquencies by 0.61 percent for that one-year period.

January 2009 saw the lowest reported foreclosure level in the Houma-Thibodaux area of the past 31 months at 0.87 percent. The high point of foreclosures for the MSA during that time period was in January of this year at 2.2 percent.


The New Orleans metropolitan area posted 7,822 foreclosure filings during 2010 according to RealtyTrac. That same year the Houma-Thibodaux area saw 371 foreclosures filed.

Shreveport and Bossier City posted 1,429 foreclosures in 2010 and Lafayette reported 843 foreclosures last year.

Although the most recent matching month-to-date statistics were not available for Baton Rouge, the state capitol did list a 214 percent increase from 2008 to 2009.

During the month of July, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office has 17 foreclosed homes up for sale. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office has 21 residences, and the Terrebonne Parish lists 22 foreclosed homes ready to auction.

“It really has been pretty steady,” said St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s office manager Lilly Thomas of foreclosures being sold during the past year. “We really have not seen much change.”
