Suzanne Carlos has been named president and CEO of the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce.

Last month Carlos was named the interim chief of the organization, which represents more than 900 members.

Board Chairwoman Jennifer Armand praised Carlos’ attention to detail and ability to ease the chamber through a transition, the second time leadership changed in a one-year span.

“In the interim President/CEO position, Suzanne has demonstrated effective leadership skills and a great appreciation for the chamber’s role in supporting our business community,” Armand said in a printed statement. “We are please to officially welcome her as the manager of our organization.”

Carlos, a Terrebonne native, most recently worked as a project director for the Lafourche Parish School District. She has also worked as a program coordinator and training specialist with the Terrebonne Parish School District and community relations and volunteer coordinator with Terrebonne General Medical Center.

Carlos is an active volunteer coordinator for the Terrebonne Foundation for Academic Excellence.

“Being part of such a dynamic team, and working toward improving our life here in Terrebonne Parish is a wonderful opportunity,” Carlos said. “It will be my mission to maintain the five-star accreditation rating that this organization has attained, and to grow and strengthen the Chamber for our members and the community.”

Carlos’ appointment comes less than a year after the chamber publicly opposed the Terrebonne school district’s failed proposal to raise its property-tax collections and months after the chamber and school board formed a joint task force to address the system’s revenue shortfalls.

Carlos replaced Gordon Crow, the former Idaho state senator who held the position for about six months after relocating to Houma.

Crow did not offer the reason behind his resignation, and Armand declined to elaborate.Crow had been hired to replace Drake Pothier, who resigned in late 2012 to focus on running his private insurance business.
