Brenda Dardar-Robichaux was the winner of the Athena Award at the Women’s Business Alliance 6th Annual Athena International Awards Banquet last week in Houma.


“I was very surprised to have won the ward,” Dardar-Robichaux said. “I was among ladies who have been doing some pretty amazing things in our communities.”

Dardar-Robichaux is the principal chief of all districts of the United Houma Nation and a board member of Bayou Healers, an organization that seeks to protect the Houma tribe’s homeland for future generations. She was director/cultural resource specialist for Lafourche Parish School Board’s Indian Education for 32 years. Dardar-Robichaux was the first person in her family to graduate high school because her mother and father were not allowed to attend public schools.


In her years at the head of the UHN, Dardar-Robichaux has also implemented new tribal initiative such as cultural preservation programs, vocational rehabilitation services, tribal elder and youth development. She also started the United Houma Nation Relief Fund to help tribal members return home and rebuild after recent hurricanes affected the Louisiana coast. She is serves on several boards and has received many awards for her civic service.


“The Women’s Business Alliance is an organization that I look forward to working with and being involved in,” she said. “They are wonderful and interesting ladies.”

Dardar-Robichaux was presented with a $1,000 check to donate to a charity of her choice.

“I will be donating the money to the Louisiana Environmental Action Network,” she said. “The network addresses issues related to the BP oil spill, and they could use the support for all the wonderful work they are doing.”

Other nominees for the Athena Award were Wendy Wilson Billiot with Wetland Tour and Guide Service, Camp DuLarge, and Wetlands Media; Pat Chauvin of Pat’s of Chauvin; Josefina Guerrero-Fondaw of La Joya u El Encanto; Linda C. Henderson of Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government; Carl “Tracy” Schwab with Tracy Schwab Law; Katie Sims, Options for Independence; Tara Stringer with Southern Care; and Frances Diane Yeates with Terrebonne General Medical Center.
