After being open for less than a year then closing, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit restaurant at 6489 W. Park Ave. in Houma reopened this week under new franchise ownership.

Denny McCullough has bought the existing Houma franchise and promises a quality product and service that he said is the standard among Dickey’s 230 restaurant locations in 44 states.

“We’re the biggest barbeque franchise in the world,” McCullough said. “You can’t beat [Houma] for a location. There is so much going on here, and they are really missing barbecue.”

McCullough said the previous franchise owner decided this business was not for him and moved on to other career ventures. “It kind of looked like it wasn’t making it because it took [Dickey’s] awhile to get the right person,” he said. “The restaurant itself was doing great.”

With a nine-year Army background and an economics degree from Louisiana Tech University, McCullough is breaking into the restaurant business by way of Dickey’s Veteran’s Incentive Package.

Dickey’s has a history of being supportive of military families. The company offers a 33 percent fee discount to qualified honorably-discharged veterans taking on at least a 51 percent majority franchise ownership. In turn Dickey’s is among 10 percent of franchise-based businesses nationwide that is ranked as military friendly by G.I. Jobs Magazine.

“We are honored to be on this list,” Dickey’s President Roland Dickey Jr. said. “Dickey’s is proud to offer a veteran’s incentive program as a way to give back to former military personnel who have given so much to serve our country.”

“I was looking at a Dickey’s franchise in another state,” McCullough said. “When they told me they had this one available I jumped on it. The growth opportunities here are huge.

“We have a gold standard, which means getting involved with the community. That is what we intend to do,” he added.

Franchise and start-up costs for Dickey’s restaurants vary by location. McCullough said financial information for his medium-sized eatery is protected by a non-disclosure contract.

Back for a second try, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit on Park Avenue in Houma reopened this week. The franchise operation was secured by Denny McCullough through the company’s veteran’s ownership program.
