Consumers headed to the Bayou Home Show this weekend will not only have an opportunity to see the latest products for building, remodeling or decorating, but their admission will benefit the education of future construction tradesmen and craftsmen in southeast Louisiana.

Sponsored by the Southeast Louisiana Homebuilders Association and produced by JAAS Productions, the event could generate anywhere between $1 million and $5 million for the 85 vendors who will display and demonstrate everything from foundation securing systems to the latest slicers and dicers.

“It’s basically a home show in which vendors are going to be showing products and services related to the home from builders, to remodelers, to products like kitchens and baths, doors, windows, roofing and green energy products. It’s directed to the homeowner,” JAAS Productions spokesman Jerry D’Eremo said.

“We have some Louisiana companies that come in with gourmet foods and they’ll be selling them right there on the floor,” D’Eremo said.

Mike Rodrigue, owner of Rod’s Superstore in Houma, is one of the business owners who will be presenting products n in his case $30,000 of inventory in a new kitchen display. But his intention to participate goes beyond making a sale or two.

“We are in it to support the Southeast Louisiana Homebuilders Association,” Rodrigue said. “There will be a lot of people looking into remodeling or home building.”

The SLHA hopes with money generated from the event they can help to send several young people to trade schools in the five-parish area they cover. “Trade schools can cost about $600 a semester. There is a shortage of tradesmen out there and we want to help our industry,” SLHA President Rob Hamilton said.

Hamilton, who heads Rob Hamilton Construction in Houma, said that homeowners and even renters looking for ideas should attend the show. “It will give them ideas,” he said.

The Bayou Home Show will open at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5 at the door.
