Young entrepreneurs have the opportunity to test their business skills by establishing their own lemonade stands in the Houma Courthouse Square on May 3.

More than 17,000 youth, ages 4 to 18, are expected to participate in the statewide program designed to teach children how to start, own and operate their own lemonade business.

From 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., participants can set up their lemonade stands at the Houma Downtown Market. The “Lemonaders” have the chance to win prizes for the most creative stand and for the best tasting lemonade.

Participants are advised to “spend a little, save a little and share a little,” by donating a portion of their proceeds to a local charity of their choice. Once all of their business expenses and investors are paid off, the students are encouraged to open a youth savings account.

Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet said he is excited the next generation has the opportunity to participate in Lemonade Day.

“Lemonade Day provides a great opportunity for our young people to actively learn about business, leadership and team work,” Claudet said.

Jerry Ledet, president of Synergy Bank, said the bank is proud to support the cause for students.

“We recognize that through tough financial education and the promotion of the spirit of entrepreneurship to our youth we are contributing to the economic growth and well-being of the Bayou Region.”

Students can register for Lemonade Day online at www.louisiana.lemonadeday.org, the Terrebonne Parish Main Library or at Synergy Bank on Synergy Center Boulevard. Any students wishing to set up a lemonade stand on May 3 should contact Katie Portier at 985-851-3341.

Registration comes with a free backpack, which contains materials to help participants establish their lemonade stand.

Mary Risener, Miss Louisiana Teen USA 2014, Library Director Mary LeBoeuf, Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet and other officials gather at a lemonade stand in the Terrebonne Parish Main Library to commemorate Lemonade Day’s move into Houma. Registration is open for the event on May 3.
