First-time claims for jobless benefits in Louisiana dropped the last week of February to their lowest level in over three years.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says there were 2,664 initial claims for the week ending Feb. 25. That’s the lowest count since December 2008 – and represents four consecutive weeks of drops.

Last week’s initial claims fell 11.4 percent from 3,007 the previous week. For the comparable week a year ago, there were 3,196 first-time claims.

Those still looking for work filed for an additional 37,287 weeks of benefits last week – down from the previous week’s 39,009. The Workforce Commission says that’s the lowest level since January 2009. Additional benefit weeks have fallen in Louisiana for seven straight weeks.
