The Louisiana Department of Insurance says it will examine proposed health insurance rate increases and determine if they are unreasonable.

Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says the state has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to review rates for health insurance.

He told The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge that the state’s health insurance rates are not out of line and that reports by the Kaiser Family Foundation show that premiums in Louisiana consistently fall around the national average.

Under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a rate increase is considered unreasonable if it is either unjustified, excessive or unfairly discriminatory.
