The Louisiana Department of Revenue has issued a reminder that May 16 is the deadline for filing state income tax returns.

Filings can be conducted online and payments made electronically. Anyone wanting to file an extension must submit their requests before the filing due date.

Department of Revenue officials note that the number of Louisiana taxpayers filing electronic returns this year has already the total filed in 2010.

As of April 25, the LDR had received 1,420,342 electronic returns, and exceeded the 1,373,333 electronic returns received between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2010. So far this year, the LDR has received approximately 335,000 paper returns.

“This surge in the adoption of electronic filing demonstrates the confidence that taxpayers and tax preparers have in this method,” said Secretary of Revenue Cynthia Bridges. “Electronic Filing is the fastest, easiest, most error-free method of filing tax returns.”

Electronic filing saves both time and money for taxpayers. While paper returns can take as many as 16 weeks to process and offer a refund return, electronic filing can get through the system in an average of 10 business days.

The state’s Department of Revenue operates Louisiana File Online, a web-based application at www.revenue.louisiana.gov/fileonline. Louisiana is one of only 22 states that offer free tax filing through government websites.
