Mike Naquin retired from his post as chief financial officer at Nicholls State University on Friday after 35 years dedicated to the university.

His retirement comes at a time when the university is preparing its annual budget, and Naquin will continue to serve in a temporary appointment until his replacement is hired.

As a 1978 graduate of Nicholls, Naquin earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and started working as a staff accountant at the university in 1979. Throughout the years, Naquin was promoted to positions such as assistant controller, controller, assistant vice president for business affairs in July 2001, and that position later became assistant vice president for finance.

He acquired the position of chief financial officer in 2011.

“Mike Naquin has been a tremendous asset to Nicholls State University for over 30 years,” said Bruce Murphy, President of Nicholls. “In that time he has taken us through financial good time as well as lean times and done it superbly. He is well-respected not only on campus but also in Baton Rouge at the University of Louisiana System office. He will be missed.”

Lionel Naquin Jr., Nicholls vice president for finance and administration emeritus, was Mike’s predecessor.

“Through the years Mike learned the ins and outs of Nicholls. There’s nobody there who knows better the intricate details of what it takes to keep that financial system going strong,” Lionel said.

Amongst his duties at Nicholls, Naquin is also involved with Thibodaux’s Volunteer Fire Department, serving as fire chief from 1997 to 2011. He was also selected as grand marshal of the 2014 Thibodaux Fireman’s Fair.
