Alligators, sharks and sting rays, oh my!

“I grew up in New Orleans, and the Audubon Institute was a big part of my childhood,” said Dalton Primeaux, Nicholls State University 2013 graduate and editor-in-chief of The WearHouse District, a style blog based in New Orleans. “It was fairly new at the time.

“It is an amazing and great institute. Audubon has great education programs, and they are a great presence in the city.”

Primeaux and fellow Nicholls’ mass communications graduates Veronica Traigle, who serves as The WearHouse District’s creative director, and Haley Hebert, an intern, are teaming up to present WildHouse Fashion, a wildlife-inspired design competition, and live musical performances.

Set for 7 to 10 p.m., June 1, at New Orleans’ House of Blues, all proceeds from the cocktail/fashion party will benefit the Audubon Nature Institute.

New Orleans’ designers Erica Durousseau, Faye Caston and Michelle O’Reagan will create ensembles, which will be auctioned after the timed competition. Thibodaux’s The Ivory Sons and Af the Naysayer will perform.

“It’s a cocktail event and fashion design competition modeled after the Project Runway television show,” Primeaux said. “We are hoping to draw 200 people and raise $2,000.”

The June 1 event will put Primeaux’s college degree to the test. “Personally, in (Nicholls’ mass communications program), I’ve seen how amazing the program is. I knew that we (Primeaux, Traigle and Hebert) would need the dedication and professionalism that lie within Nicholls’ (mass comm) students to make such a huge, important event realized.”

The WearHouse District blog was born two years ago to unite fashion designers, musicians and artists in the New Orleans community. It focuses on the Big Easy’s fashion trends, nightlife and special events. According to the blog, members “are advocates for self-expression and creativity, where it is through fashion, fine art or music. This group of young movers and shakers spend their time connecting with their audience and other creative thinkers to try and build a new community that can have fun and appreciate art in all its forms.”

The blog is the product of Primeaux’s and Traigle’s experiences with fashion. Primeaux served as a public relations intern during New Orleans’ International Fashion Week, igniting his fascination in the fashion industry. “I used the connection I had from fashion week to land another internship with invadeNOLA magazine’s fashion section,” he said. “That’s how I met Veronica.”

For her part, Traigle had modeled at invadeNOLA photo shoots.

“We thought, ‘This is fun. We should keep doing it on our own,’” Primeaux said.

It was after the internship ended that the two launched the blog. Primeaux said the site – www.thewearhousedistrict.com – has close to 100 subscribers and 50,000 Twitter followers.

“The blog is getting great response from other bloggers and designers,” he said. “Over the past few months, we have also started getting a good response from the general public. We went from 100 views a month to 1,000 views a month.”

“We were thrilled that they contacted us,” Rachel Gaudry, development administrative coordinator at the Audubon Nature Institute, said of the benefit. “It’s just wonderful. The fund helps everything we do. It supports all parts of our mission.”

The institute is comprised of 10 museums and parks, including Audubon Zoo, Aquarium of the Americas, the Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, the Entergy IMAX Theatre, Audubon Park, Audubon Golf Course and the Clubhouse Café.

Gaudry said monies from WildHouse Fashion will offset such expenses as the care and wellbeing of the institute’s animals, the animal hospital, endangered species research and wildlife rescues. Donations also benefit the institute’s science education programs, which reach more than 5,000 students annually.

Tickets to WildHouse Fashion are $20 per person and are available through May 30 at www.wildhouse.eventbrite.com or at the door.

The House of Blues Foundation Room is located at 225 Decatur St.
