The Port of Terrebonne will be receiving $700,000 in grants from the federal Department of Commerce to install sewer service to port tenants, according to a Terrebonne Economic Development Authority release.

The port was approved for the money on Sept. 9.

The money will pay for half the estimated price of the project. The port will pay the remainder of the cost.

Currently, port tenants have to use independent sewage treatment plants.

The new sewer service will be able to expand to handle future tenants on the port’s east side and can connect with infrastructure changes planned by Terrebonne Parish, according to TEDA.

The improvements “will make leasing property at the port more attractive,” said David Rabalais, executive director of the port.

TEDA and South Central Planning and Development worked with the port commission to apply for the federal funding.

The grant money is administered through the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
