Two former Port of Terrebonne board members were recently honored for their contributions in helping the port grow into a viable location for industry.

The Terrebonne Port Commission gave plaques of appreciation to Robert “Bobby” Barthel, general manager of Quality Shipyards, and Kerry Chauvin, chief executive officer of Gulf Island Fabrications at its March 20 meeting.

Barthel and Chauvin both served several terms as commission board members. Through their leadership, the port has grown significantly, Port of Terrebonne Director David Rabalais said in a release.

The port has six tenants today, and officials are in negotiations with more companies to expand operations at the Industrial Boulevard site.

Rabalais said Barthel and Chauvin are widely recognized for their business and management acumen. They were often called upon to review and recommend actions relating to administration of the port, according to release. Business obligations led both men to reluctantly resign their port commission seats. But they still maintain a strong commitment to assist port officials whenever called upon, the release said.

“Their regular guidance will be sorely missed,” said Rabalais, “and they should be commended for their meritorious service on the Terrebonne Port Commission and to the people of Terrebonne Parish.”

Located on 400 acres in East Houma, the Port of Terrebonne is an important asset for the parish. Easily accessible to major waterways connecting with neighboring states and accessing the Gulf of Mexico, the site offers publicly held waterfront property available for industrial activity.
