Four area high school seniors were awarded scholarships to Nicholls State University for the 2007-08 fall and spring semesters by South Louisiana Electric Cooperative Association (SLECA).

Miranda Blanchard, Ashley Mader and Jacey Tanner of Houma and Ashley Bahry of Morgan City were this year’s scholarship recipients.

Blanchard is a graduate of the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts in Natchitoches; Mader is a graduate of Terrebonne High School; Tanny is a graduate of Vanderbilt Catholic High School; and Bahry is a graduate of Morgan City High School.

“The scholarship program is an investment in our local students by making quality education more easily accessible and affordable,” said Mike Guidry, SLECA general manager.

SLECA awards four $1,000 scholarships annually to be used for school expenses, such as room and board, books or school supplies. Any high school senior whose home is served by SLECA or who has a parent who is a manager or owner of a company that is a SLECA customer is eligible to apply. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance as well as other criteria.

This year’s recipients plan to pursue a variety of fields. Blanchard is planning to study mathematics and education; Mader, elementary education; Tanner, pre-medicine and biology; and Bahry, biological engineering.
