Small-business owners faced with the daunting task of providing affordable employee health insurance coverage can learn about some options at a free Baton Rouge seminar May 1.

The event will be held from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the Associated Grocers conference room, 8600 Anselmo Lane. The deadline to register is Friday, April 25, and space is limited.

The seminar will include panel discussions on health insurance basics, consumer-directed healthcare, health savings accounts, how to work with a broker and other topics. Attendees will receive a guide on insurance options and have the opportunity to meet with several major group health insurance carriers.

Refreshments will be provided at a reception following the seminar from 4:30 to 6 p.m.

The half-day seminar is one of several activities planned for Cover the Uninsured Week. This year’s campaign is designed to focus on the need for health coverage for all Americans. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 44 million Americans – including more than 8 million children – have no health coverage. In Louisiana alone, 16 percent of adults live without health insurance, many of them employed full-time.

“All Louisiana citizens – regardless of their insurance status – need to get involved and share our concern about this urgent issue,” said Jim Donelon, commissioner of the Louisiana Department of Insurance, which is cosponsoring the seminar with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. “There has never been a more important time for us to come together and make Louisiana’s uninsured a top priority.”

To register for the health insurance seminar, visit the state Department of Insurance Web site at www.ldi.state.la.us/Health/ LHCC/upcoming_events.htm, or contact Thomas Clemons, Louis-iana Department of Insurance, at (225) 219-4772 or, via e-mail, tclemons@ldi.state.la.us, or Robin Mayhall, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana, at (225) 298-1992 or robin.mayhall@bcbsla. com.
