The Louisiana Department of the Treasury announced last week that residents wanting to go into 2011 with extra cash might want to look into unclaimed assets being held by the state.

The treasury has approximately $447 million in unclaimed funds, including payroll checks, old bank accounts, royalties, utility deposits, interest payments, stock certificates, and life insurance proceeds.

According to Treasurer John Kennedy one-in-six Louisiana residents have unclaimed property registered with the state.

After completing a claim application the resident must provide information to prove his/her identity, or the relationship one has with a deceased relative who might have property listed. The average cash refund for held property carries a value of between $300 and $400. The largest refund on unclaimed property was $1 million signed over to a New Orleans area resident.

Louisiana residents wanting to file a claim can do it online at www.latreasury.com or by calling 1-888-925-4127.
