Terrebonne Parish’s school district just got a little safer thanks to the donation of 10 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) by Terrebonne General Medical Center’s Community Sports Institute.

The Foundation for TGMC funded the AEDs.

“Our community through The Foundation for TGMC has embraced the opportunity to further the efforts of TGMC to provide the very best health care through programming and equipment donations,” said Phyllis Peoples, president and CEO of TGMC. “They have been exceptionally giving to the TGMC Community Sports Institute program and have supported our efforts wholeheartedly.”

AEDs are portable electronic devices that automatically diagnose  life-threatening cardiac events. According to the American Red Cross, sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. This year, more than 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest. An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and can be used without prior experience.

“The Foundation for TGMC, through the generosity of many community-minded businesses, individuals and organizations has reached milestones in caring for our community,” said Mike Fakier, chairman of the Foundation for TGMC. “Caring for the members of our community by donating the AEDs plays a huge role in their wellness and prevention. It’s the heart of what we do.”

Brett Chiasson, Mike Fakier, Paul Labat and Stan Gravois present Roger Dehart, Philip Martin and Jack Moore with an automated external defibrillator, one of 10 that will be distributed throughout the school district.
