Thibodaux Regional Medical Center is changing south Louisiana’s health-care industry one patient at a time. A recipient of numerous awards, the medical center is no stranger to the type of attention it received last Tuesday.

Hospital CEO Greg Stock and Jacob Giardina, chairman of the board of commissioners, accepted the 2009 Community Value Index Five-Star Award during an award ceremony at Fremins Restaurant in Thibodaux.

Cleverley and Associates – an Ohio-based research group – presented the award, which is based on several factors: quality of care provided, financial strength, investment in technology and facilities plus cost structure and charge structure.

Jamie Cleverley, the principal of Cleverley and Associates, admitted to attendees that the health-care industry is full of uncertainty.

But as the “value proposition” – the baseline for Cleverley and Associate’s independent research – comes into play, many questions can be answered, including: Are hospital staff members caring and compassionate? Is the hospital efficient? Does the hospital have adequate resources? And does it provide excellent clinical care?

However, the big question for patients is, “What will I get for my money?”

Cleverley said that health-care providers should ask themselves if services are worth the amount of money paid.

And with the health-care industry on the fence, the answers to these questions are even more important.

Because the assessment conducted by Cleverley and Associates is not voluntary, the five-star award is hard earned.

Cleverley said, “Thibodaux Regional is a top performing hospital ranking in the top 20 percent of hospitals nationwide.

“This means that Thibodaux Regional is a leader in the hospital industry at providing the highest quality of care and service, while appropriately reinvesting back into the facility.”

Due to its financial and clinical viability, the medical center was also touted as a partner in the community. “Just ask the nurses and doctors if they have the things they need to work with,” said Stock.
