The most popular gift this Valentine’s Day is red roses, but customers at local floral shops are buying a wide variety of floral arrangements, according to local florists.

“We will sell 4,000 roses by Wednesday,” said Danny Foret, manager of Bayou Flowers in Houma. “This is the busiest time of year. It’s crazy. I told my wife goodbye Monday morning. I told her I’d see her Thursday.”

Although red roses are by far the most popular item purchased from local florists this time of year, House of Flowers owner Denise Bourg said, “this year men are placing more orders for mothers, babysitters, co-workers n all the people you say ‘I love you’ to. People are buying flowers not just to show passion and romance but all kinds of love.”

Bourg said, “ This time of year 80 or 90 percent of our customers are men. I guess it’s all about emotions. Some guys are thoughtful and buy to show love and some guys figure-they had better buy flowers for their wives or girlfriends.”

Irrespective of why men buy women flowers at Valentine’s Day, it seems they all want them delivered.

“Most guys want them delivered to the office of their significant other so people can ooh and aahh over the gift,” said Bourg.

All those added deliveries also translate into more local jobs.

“I’ve hired seven delivery drivers for the holiday, Foret said.

This year, with Mardi Gras falling so close to Valentine’s Day, local florists are scrambling to keep up with demand. In addition to the traditional Valentine’s Day floral arrangements, local florists are supplying fresh floral arrangements in Mardi Gras colors to the 13 krewes parading in the area for Mardi Gras.

Bayou Flowers’ Jennifer Foret said, “This time of year it’s non-stop. Customers are non-stop. Phones are nonstop. But it’s a good holiday. People are nicer this time of year.”
