The Lockport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 83 will assist area military veterans in applying for the state’s new honors medal.

The Legislature created the recognition in March, and it was subsequently approved by the state Department of Veterans Affairs. Louisiana men who served during war or peacetime and were honorably discharged are eligible to receive the medal.

Relatives of deceased servicemen or women may also apply on behalf of a veteran. The serviceman must have lived in Louisiana.

Membership in the American Legion is not required to receive help.

The auxiliary will help applicants complete paperwork Monday, May 18, and Tuesday, May 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the 921 Veterans St. hall in Lockport. Proof of service or honorable discharge papers must be provided.
