Man arrested for attempted simple robbery in Houma Tunnel

Three black males attempted to rob a 40-year-old man as he walked through the Houma Tunnel Monday afternoon, according to a Houma Police spokesman.


Lt. Todd Duplantis said the incident occurred around 2:18 p.m. The victim told police the men were walking behind him in the tunnel when he was struck in the head and forced to the ground. While he was on the ground, a man in a blue T-shirt and blue jeans tried to hold his hands while an accomplice n who was wearing a black T-shirt and jeans n attempted to steal his wallet.

The two men allegedly told the victim they had a gun, Duplantis said.


After several unsuccessful tries to wrestle away the billfold, the third suspectnwho was wearing jeans and a white T-shirt n told the other two it was time to leave, the spokesman said. They ran toward east Houma.


The victim called police from his cell phone.

When officers arrived, Duplantis said the victim’s cheek was swelling; however, the man refused medical treatment.

Police patrolling eastern Houma found Zachary Smith, 19, of 620 Lafayette St., one of the three men suspected of the tunnel robbery attempt. Duplantis said when police stopped Smith, the man was sweating profusely.

Smith was arrested for attempted simple robbery and was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Jail.
