A Cut Off resident and Galliano businessman is the latest appointee to the University of Louisiana System board of supervisors.

Jimmie “Beau” Martin Jr., an owner of B&J Martin Inc., a fishing and offshore housing manufacturing company based in Galliano, was tapped by Gov. Bobby Jindal to replace former state Sen. Louis Lambert of Prairieville.

Beginning immediately, Martin serves as a representative of the Third Congressional District.

The 16-member board – comprised of two members from each congressional district, one at-large member and one student member – oversees the activity of all universities, excluding Louisiana State and Southern universities.

Nicholls State University is a member in the UofL system.

“I would like to thank Gov. Jindal for the appointment and the confidence he has placed in me,” Martin said. “It is a critical time for higher education in Louisiana and there are going to be some important decisions this board will have to make in the coming months.

“I look forward to working with all my fellow board members, the Jindal administration and the Legislature to help move our universities and state in a positive direction,” he added.

New Orleans oil-and-gas businessman David Guidry, one of two minority board members, was also appointed.

Lambert, an LSU graduate and attorney, is the new at-large board member.
