Melancon, 46 others in area unopposed at qualifying

Four years after battling for his political life, U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon (D-Napoleonville) will return to office unopposed. And he will have plenty of company, as many local incumbents are running unopposed in the primary election Sept. 6.

In all, 46 Tri-parish offices will go unchallenged this year, including the district attorneys in Terrebonne, Lafourche and St. Mary parishes.

Melancon’s last serious challenge for the state’s third congressional district seat was in 2004.

In the open primary, former state senator Craig Romero lost out to Melancon for the chance to face Billy Tauzin Jr. in the general election. Romero unsuccessfully tried to dispute the results, and Melancon went on to defeat Tauzin Jr. in the runoff by 569 votes.

In 2006, Romero won the Republican primary but lost to Melancon in the general election by 20,000 votes.

The race to fill the region’s U.S. Senate seat pits incumbent Sen. Mary Landrieu against state Treasurer John Kennedy and J. Jacques Boudreaux, both Baton Rouge Republicans.
