A one-year-old baby survived a single-car crash on La. 182 that killed her mother Tuesday evening, state police reported.

Natasha Thibodeaux, 20, of Houma, lost control of her 1999 Ford Taurus and struck a bridge railing on the highway, two miles east of Savanne Road, said Trooper First Class Rodney Hyatt, spokesman of Louisiana State Police Troop C. The wreck occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m., he said.

Acadian Ambulance transported Thibodeaux to Terrebonne General Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead, Hyatt said.

Moments after the crash, Hyatt said Thibodeaux exited the vehicle to check on her baby in the back seat. He said state police did not know if the woman was wearing a safety belt at the time of the wreck.

The child, who was properly secured in an infant seat, suffered only minor injuries, Hyatt said. The baby was also transported to Terrebonne General for treatment.

Hyatt said state police do not suspect alcohol use as a factor in the crash; however, in compliance with state law, blood tests will be conducted by the agency’s crime lab in Baton Rouge.

The crash is still under investigation and no charges are pending, Hyatt said.
